For my author
project, I chose the fabulous author, Margaret Peterson Haddix. I read the
books, Among The Hidden, Just Ella, and Don’t You Dare Read
This, Mrs. Dunphrey.
Among The Hidden is about Luke, a forbidden third child, who is stuck
inside all the time. One day, he sees a girl inside a house where two boys
already live. He then decides to take the risk to go and meet Jen. Jen tries to
convince Luke to come along with her on a rebellion to stop the third child
law, but Luke refuses. Jen still goes and Luke finds out that she was killed.
But, Jen’s dad gives Luke the chance to become free; he won’t have to hide
anymore. The only problem is he wouldn’t be able to ever see his family again.
Just Ella is about Ella, a peasant girl who is about to become a
princess. Ella thinks that her future is already planned, with her marrying the
prince and living “happily ever after”. After a few weeks in the castle, Ella
decides that she doesn’t want to marry the prince and have to live as “royalty”
for the rest of her life. She wants to have adventure; some excitement in her
life. She then runs away from the castle to a place called “Sualan”, where
there is an exciting war going on. She decides that she wants to be a medic for
the peasants in “Sualan”.
Don’t You
Dare Read This, Mrs.Dunphrey is about a girl named Tish Bonner. Her English
teacher, Mrs. Dunphrey is making her high school class keep a journal to
practice their writing skills. They can mark any of their entries, “Don’t read
this, Mrs. Dunphrey". Tish’s abusive dad left their family when Tish was
very young. He has now come back and is pretending to be really nice and buy
Tish’s family presents all the time when is really just stealing Tish’s mom’s
money. Mr. Bonner then leaves for good on Christmas Eve after he pushes Tish.
Tish’s mother is completely devastated and decides to go to California to find
him. She leaves Tish (who is 16) in charge of her little brother, Matt. Tish
can barely pay off any of the bills and just when she thought that nothing
could get any worse, she is fired from her job at “The Burger Boy”. So far,
Tish has marked all of her entries as “Don’t read this, Mrs. Dunphrey".
But now, Tish decides to let her teacher read everything.
My favorite book that I read was
definitely Don’t You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey because it really made
think about how much we all take for granted having parents that love us.
